Incheon Line 1 Geomdan Extension to Open in June... Incheon City Applies for Basic Plan Modification

The Geomdan Extension of Incheon Subway Line 1 is scheduled to officially open in June 2025.

The Geomdan Extension extends Incheon Line 1 by 6.8 kilometers from Gyeyang Station to Bullo-dong in Seo-gu, adding three new stations: Ara Station, Singeomdan Central Station, and Geomdan Lake Park Station. This project was promoted as a measure to improve metropolitan transportation in response to the residential development of the Geomdan District.

Construction of the Geomdan Extension began in December 2019, and facility verification tests were completed last month. Currently, trial operations are underway. Prior to the opening, the city completed consultations with Incheon Urban Development Corporation and Korea Land and Housing Corporation regarding the Geomdan Extension construction project, and recently applied to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for a change to the basic plan.

Due to rising prices, the city increased the total project cost by 62.3 billion won, from 727.7 billion won to 790 billion won. In consideration of the transfer distance to Incheon Subway Line 2 in the future, the location of Geomdan Lake Park Station (Station 103) was relocated. In addition, to secure better visibility for railway workers, the city decided to straighten the track at the terminus, changing the total extension length from the original 6.9 kilometers to 6.825 kilometers.

After completing the change to the basic plan, the city plans to proceed with the official opening following the comprehensive railway test operation report and the approval process for changes to the railway safety system.

Once the Geomdan Extension opens, it will establish a comprehensive public transportation network covering all of Incheon, including Geomdan New Town, as well as existing urban areas such as Gyeyang, Bupyeong, and Juan, and even Songdo International City. In particular, the travel time from Geomdan New Town to Gyeyang Station is expected to decrease by about 12 minutes, from approximately 20 minutes to 8 minutes, significantly improving access to Seoul via the Airport Railroad and Seoul Subway Line 7.

An official from Incheon City stated, "In preparation for the opening of the Geomdan Extension, we will thoroughly review the transportation system in advance and improve both the route and transfer system to provide citizens with more convenient and efficient transportation services."
