Construction to Begin in September...
Aiming to Open in 2027
On April 28, Wonju City in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Mayor Won Kangsoo) announced that the construction of the Wonju City Art Museum has gained further momentum, as the project passed the review of the 4th Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Construction Technology Review Committee held on April 16.
This approval signifies that the design of the Wonju City Art Museum has been recognized by Gangwon Province for its stability, feasibility, and suitability for construction. Buoyed by the results of the review, Wonju City plans to complete the administrative procedures within the first half of the year and commence construction in September.
The Wonju City Art Museum will be built on the site of the former Camp Long U.S. military base, with a total floor area of 4,843.06 square meters and three above-ground floors. It will house exhibition halls, storage rooms, and curatorial research facilities. The museum is expected to expand the region's cultural infrastructure, satisfy citizens' desire for art and culture, and invigorate the promotion of local arts and culture.
Mayor Won Kangsoo stated, "The Wonju City Art Museum will become a symbolic space for the growth of the local art culture," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure the project proceeds smoothly with the goal of opening in 2027, so that citizens can enjoy a high-quality cultural venue."
