Completion Ceremony Held on the 25th... A Fantastical Space Created with Tile Art Inspired by Fairy Tales
Public Art Project Continuing Since 2019... Expanding Culture and Arts in Everyday Life
Ryu Kyunggi, mayor of Jungnang District, is explaining the opening of the 41st Our Neighborhood Art Museum.
Jungnang District (Mayor Ryu Kyunggi) held a completion ceremony for the 41st work of the public art project "Jungnang Our Neighborhood Art Museum," titled "Wonderland in Jungnang," on April 25.
"Jungnang Our Neighborhood Art Museum" is an urban landscape improvement project that transforms various locations in the district into public art spaces, allowing residents to enjoy diverse cultural works in their everyday lives. The project identifies unused spaces in the community together with residents and collaborates with professional artists to turn them into art spaces.
In particular, every step of the project?from selecting the site and participating artists to planning and installing the artwork?involves public proposals and the collection of residents' opinions. As residents' feedback is reflected throughout the entire process, the community's affection for the artworks is especially strong.
Last year, the district installed the 39th and 40th works in Myeonmok 3·8-dong and Sinnae 2-dong, respectively. Near Junghwa Middle School in Myeonmok 3·8-dong, an art sculpture titled "Our Heart Garden," which expresses the feelings of residents and students in the form of flowers and plants, transformed the school commute route into a brighter space. On the pedestrian path in front of Sinhyeon High School to Sinatown in Sinnae 2-dong, residents participated in creating the knitted artwork "Warm Jungnang Colored by Hand Knitting," which brought warmth to the winter streetscape.
The 41st work was installed on both retaining walls at the entrance of the underpass beneath the Dongbu Expressway in Myeonmok 2-dong, commonly known as "Tokkigul" (Rabbit Tunnel). Drawing on the unique characteristics of "Gyeomjae Book Street" and "Tokkigul," the space was reimagined as a place full of imagination inspired by the fairy tale "Alice in Wonderland." Oversized objects were represented with colorful mosaic tiles, allowing pedestrians to experience a fantastical world of art in their daily routines.
For children, the installation offers the joy of encountering a fairy tale they previously knew only from books in a real-life setting. For adults, it provides an emotional experience that evokes memories of childhood.
Ryu Kyunggi, mayor of Jungnang District, said, "Now, residents can encounter high-quality works of art throughout the district in their daily lives. We will continue to promote public art projects to enhance the brand value of Jungnang as a cultural city."
