A Joyful Spring Flower Relay:
From Cherry Blossoms to Azaleas and Peonies
Hapcheon County in South Gyeongsang Province is welcoming travelers with a "wave of vibrant spring flowers."
After announcing the start of spring with cherry blossoms in full bloom along the Baekri Cherry Blossom Road at Hapcheon Lake, Hapcheon County plans to showcase a picturesque scene with local spring flower attractions such as the azalea colony on Hwangmaesan Mountain and the peonies at Hadeul Ecological Park.
The cherry blossoms along the Baekri Cherry Blossom Road at Hapcheon Lake reached full bloom earlier this month. This famous 40-kilometer flower tunnel attracted countless visitors again this year. The county also held a "Cherry Blossom Marathon" to coincide with the blooming period, which concluded successfully.
As the cherry blossoms fade, azaleas take their place. From May 1 to May 11, the county will hold the "2025 Hwangmaesan Azalea Festival" in the area surrounding Hwangmaesan County Park. Hwangmaesan Mountain (1,113 meters) is home to the nation's largest azalea colony, making it a renowned spring flower destination where a vast, vivid pink mountain garden unfolds every spring.
This year's festival offers not only the chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Hwangmaesan and the azaleas, but also features a treasure hunt event, a stamp tour, and cultural and artistic performances. There are also two special programs: the "Sharing Cart Tour," which allows those with mobility challenges to explore Hwangmaesan by electric cart, and the "Docent Tour," where a forest interpreter accompanies visitors. Both programs are free of charge and can be used after making a reservation on the official website.
On May 1, a "Azalea Ritual" will be held to pray for the well-being of residents and visitors. From April 26 to May 18, a direct market will be operated where visitors can purchase local agricultural products.
At the Hwangmae Garden Lawn Plaza, a hidden gem of Hwangmaesan, a "Companion Plant Clinic" providing plant care information will be held on May 2. From May 1 to May 6, the "Pink Market" will offer a variety of activities such as flower crown making, flowerpot sales, and accessory rentals. In addition, the Hwangmaesan treasure hunt event, held on May 5 and May 8, will offer various prizes including free camping vouchers for the Hwangmaesan Forest Campsite, Hwangto Hanwoo beef sets, and local gift certificates. During the festival, visitors can also freely use the picnic & play zone, which features bean bags (stretchy, comfortable chairs), sunshades, and wooden games.
Hadeul Ecological Park, where peonies along the walking paths stand out, is another highlight. During the peony blooming period, the county plans to expand convenience facilities and operate sales of local specialty products, food trucks, and the Pink Market.
A county official said, "We hope visitors will create unforgettable memories in Hapcheon, from the azalea colonies that turn the mountains pink to the elegant peonies blooming in the ecological park."
