Recently, signs of hacking incidents have been detected at two corporate insurance agencies (GAs), prompting financial supervisory authorities to launch an investigation into the situation.
On April 27, the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) stated, "We have identified indications of system hacking at two GAs," adding, "Currently, the Financial Security Institute is conducting an investigation and analysis of the security breach." However, at this stage, only signs of hacking have been confirmed, and it has not yet been determined whether customer information has been leaked.
The FSS explained, "In accordance with the accident response manual for personal information leaks and each company's own response plans, we are ensuring that the relevant GAs and related companies take appropriate measures at each stage of the situation," and added, "We are also working closely with related organizations such as the Korea Life Insurance Association, the Korea General Insurance Association, the GA Association, and the Financial Security Institute."
The FSS continued, "We have instructed the affected GAs to implement measures to minimize damage, such as system separation and blocking, and to report to the relevant authorities. We have also guided them to make advance preparations so that, in the event customer information leakage is confirmed, they can promptly notify customers."
Furthermore, the FSS stated, "We have instructed each GA and insurance company to conduct self-inspections for security vulnerabilities and to delete unnecessary customer information. We have also requested that insurance companies check for security vulnerabilities in their affiliated GAs."
The FSS plans to establish a comprehensive consultation center together with the Korea Life Insurance Association and the Korea General Insurance Association if information leakage is confirmed. The FSS said, "Once the cause of the customer information leak is identified, we will devise measures to prevent recurrence and ensure that GAs and insurance companies implement them."
