As of April 29 (local time), just ahead of the 100th day of President Donald Trump's term, a majority of Americans view President Trump's approach to governance negatively and believe that presidential powers are being exercised excessively, according to a recent public opinion poll.

According to a poll released on April 25 by The New York Times (NYT) and Siena College, 42% of respondents gave a positive assessment of President Trump's administration, while 54% gave a negative assessment. This survey was conducted nationwide with 913 registered voters from April 21 to April 24.

Negative evaluations were found across all policy areas, including the economy and immigration, which had been considered President Trump's strengths. In particular, 55% of respondents viewed his economic policies negatively, compared to 43% who viewed them positively. The percentage of those who said "President Trump has worsened the economy" was 50%, while only 21% said he had improved it.

Negative sentiment toward immigration policy (51%) also exceeded positive sentiment (47%). Regarding cases where the Trump administration mistakenly deported immigrants and did not make efforts to repatriate them, 52% of respondents opposed the administration's response, while only 31% supported it. In addition, 63% of respondents said that "the president should not deport legal immigrants simply for protesting against Israel."

Only 35% of respondents gave a positive assessment of the response to the war in Ukraine, while negative assessments reached 56%.

54% of respondents said that "President Trump has changed the American political and economic system too much." Positive assessments of these changes stood at 36%, while negative assessments were at 50%.

A majority of respondents wanted limits on President Trump's authority. 61% said "the president should not be able to impose tariffs without congressional approval," and 54% said "the president should not be able to eliminate programs established by congressional legislation."

NYT reported that a majority of voters, including Trump supporters, described the first three months of the Trump administration as "chaotic and frightening," and that many believe "President Trump does not understand the problems voters face in their daily lives," indicating a worsening assessment of his leadership.

Additionally, a poll conducted by the Associated Press and the University of Chicago's NORC Center for Public Affairs Research from April 17 to April 21, surveying 1,260 adults (with a margin of error of ±3.9 percentage points), found that 4 out of 10 respondents described President Trump's performance in his second term as "terrible." Furthermore, 1 out of 10 respondents described it as "poor."

In this survey, only 24% of respondents said President Trump was focusing on the "right priorities." 44% believed he was focusing on the "wrong priorities," while 21% said he was focusing on a mix of right and wrong priorities.
