Seongdong District Launches Operation of "Bicycle Steam Cleaning Station"

An Eco-Friendly Cleaning Method That Removes Dust and Contaminants from Bicycles Using High-Temperature Steam Without Detergents
Expected to Promote Bicycle Use

Seongdong District Launches Operation of "Bicycle Steam Cleaning Station"

Seongdong District (District Mayor Jeong Wonoh) announced that it will officially begin operating a "Bicycle Steam Cleaning Station" from April 29 to promote bicycle use.

Bicycle steam cleaning is an eco-friendly cleaning method that uses high-temperature steam to remove dust and contaminants from bicycles without detergents. This allows users to enjoy a clean bicycle experience while reducing environmental pollution.

The steam cleaning service also contributes to promoting bicycle use and achieving carbon neutrality. According to the "Guidelines for Application of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Unit by Local Government Reduction Projects" by the Korea Environment Corporation, if 1,000 people use bicycles once each, approximately 3,245 tons of greenhouse gases can be reduced.

This is equivalent to the carbon reduction effect of planting about 377 pine trees that are 30 years old.

The "Bicycle Steam Cleaning Station" will be installed at the Oksu Bicycle Rental Station (168-1 Oksu-dong), and any resident of Seongdong District can use it for free to clean their own bicycle. The operating hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day, including Saturdays and Sundays. However, the station will not operate on legal holidays or during the winter season (November to February).

To expand bicycle infrastructure, Seongdong District currently operates the Oksu Bicycle Rental Station as well as the Eungbong Bicycle Rental Station (3-11 Eungbong-dong), offering a variety of bicycles for free rental, from children's to adult models. In particular, the Oksu Bicycle Rental Station also operates a bicycle repair center, where users can receive simple inspections and repairs, and, for an additional fee, have parts replaced.

Jeong Wonoh, Mayor of Seongdong District, stated, "We hope that providing this eco-friendly bicycle steam cleaning service will further encourage residents to use bicycles." He added, "We will continue to pursue various practical policies to increase resident satisfaction, so that bicycles, as a means of connecting with public transportation, become a part of daily life and help achieve carbon neutrality."
