Kim Dongyeon, a preliminary presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, pledged to overcome the economic crisis and restore intra-party democracy, stating, "I will win Honam's support with the most Democratic Party-like vision and policies."
At the Honam region joint rally held at the Kim Daejung Convention Center in Gwangju on the 26th, Kim emphasized, "I, Kim Dongyeon, served President Kim Daejung at the Blue House, gaining experience and insight while standing on the shoulders of a giant. The economic crisis we are facing now is by no means less severe than it was back then."
He continued, "In the midst of a complex crisis involving an economic downturn, the regression of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, Trump's tariff bomb, and even the threat of insurrection, politicians are irresponsibly competing with tax cuts and populism. I, Kim Dongyeon, will fight against the economic crisis and ensure victory."
Referring to his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Kim said, "I negotiated with President Trump three times to resolve the Korea-US FTA and currency issues. Please put me at the forefront of the economic crisis. I will devote all my knowledge, experience, and capabilities."
He also presented a blueprint for the development of Honam. He pledged, "To enable young people in Honam to remain in their hometowns and become self-reliant, I will complete the construction of a West Coast renewable energy belt, foster Gwangju as a city of major AI and future mobility companies, develop Jeonbuk as an eco-capital, and establish a cluster for secondary batteries and advanced materials in Jeonnam."
Kim also stressed the need to restore intra-party democracy. He said, "Let us break away from the divisive and exclusionary language of 'pro-Myung,' 'non-Myung,' or 'Subak.' Let us build a greater and deeper democracy within the Democratic Party itself."
He stated, "Not a single member of the National Assembly stands by my side, but I am not lonely. Just as I would walk snowy roads when it snows and rainy roads when it rains, I will walk my own path with confidence, true to myself as Kim Dongyeon."
In closing, he appealed for support, saying, "I dream of a pleasant rebellion. Together with you, I will build a country where the dignity and creativity of every citizen shine?a nation for all, an 'advanced country for my life.'"
