Authorities Respond Quickly to Forest Fire Near Hakdong Village
Investigation Underway Into Cause and Damage
High Risk of Large-Scale Forest Fires Due to Dry Weather and Strong Winds
On the morning of April 26, a fire broke out in the forested area near Hakdong Village Community Center in Geochon-ri, Bonghwa-eup, Bonghwa County, North Gyeongsang Province, and was extinguished in about 30 minutes.
The fire started at around 9:42 a.m. that day. The forestry authorities deployed four helicopters, two vehicles, and 30 personnel to the site, and completely extinguished the fire by 10:20 a.m.
Bonghwa County sent out an emergency text message to nearby residents and hikers, stating, "Due to a forest fire in the vicinity, entry into the mountain is prohibited. Nearby residents and hikers should be cautious to avoid safety accidents."
The police and forestry authorities are investigating the exact cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
Meanwhile, with dry weather and strong winds forecast, a "large-scale forest fire risk advisory" has been issued for the East Coast regions of Gangwon and North Gyeongsang Provinces. This is due to expectations of strong winds of over 20 meters per second (25 meters per second in mountainous areas) in those regions on April 26.
