Yangsan City Strengthens Support for Small Businesses... Eases Criteria for Alley-Type Shopping District Designation

Eased Store Density Requirements
Lowering the Barriers for Alley-Type Shopping District Designation

Yangsan City in South Gyeongsang Province recently amended part of the "Ordinance on the Designation and Support for Revitalization of Alley-Type Shopping Districts in Yangsan City," easing the designation criteria and signaling a positive outlook for the revitalization of local commercial areas.

Previously, an application required at least 30 stores within an area of 2,000 square meters. However, under the revised ordinance, applications can now be made if there are at least 25 stores in commercial zones or at least 20 stores in non-commercial zones.

In addition, the committee may now exclude public land areas from consideration, and the consent requirement from land and building owners has been removed, further lowering the barriers to designating shopping districts.

This amendment provides flexible standards tailored to local conditions, expanding the designation of alley-type shopping districts and marking a significant turning point for boosting the local economy and fostering a culture of mutual growth. It is also expected to expand growth opportunities for local small business owners through support measures such as eligibility for Onnuri Gift Certificate merchant registration and participation in national and provincial grant projects.

An official from Yangsan City stated, "We expect that this ordinance amendment will lead to more active designation of new alley-type shopping districts, which will greatly help strengthen the competitiveness of small business owners in these districts and stimulate consumption." The official also called for active participation and support from local merchants.
