No Specific Details Disclosed About the Phone Call
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid the ongoing tariff war between the United States and China.
According to an interview published by the American weekly magazine Time on the morning of April 25 (local time), President Trump claimed that President Xi called him. Trump also mentioned that the U.S. administration is actively conducting negotiations to reach an agreement with China. However, he did not disclose specific details, such as when the call with President Xi took place.
Regarding the fact that President Xi called him first, Trump said, "I don't think that shows a weakness on his part."
President Trump has previously claimed that he is negotiating with China on a daily basis, but China has officially denied these claims, calling them 'fake news.' On April 24, when asked by the media whom he had spoken with in China, Trump said, "It doesn't matter who the participants in the meeting are. We might reveal that later, but they met this morning, and we had a meeting with China."
In his interview with Time, President Trump emphasized that he expects a trade agreement to be reached within the next three to four weeks. Regarding negotiations with China, he said, "There is a number that they can feel comfortable with," but reaffirmed his determination to address the trade deficit by stating, "But we cannot allow them to make a trillion dollars from us."
He also reiterated the necessity of tariffs. He responded, "The bond market is uneasy, but I am not," and when asked if he would consider it a victory if high tariffs on foreign products were still in place a year from now, he said, "That would be a complete victory."
