Hwaseong City to Cut Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 40% by 2030

Basic Plan for Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Finalized
104 Initiatives Proposed, Including Energy Self-Sufficient Villages

Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030.

On April 25, Hwaseong City announced that it had reviewed and approved the "Hwaseong City Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Basic Plan" at the "2050 Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Committee" held on April 24 in the seminar room of the Hwaseong City Research Institute. This plan is the highest-level statutory plan under the "Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth for Coping with Climate Crisis."

The city has set its vision as "Hwaseong, a Special City for Climate and Economy Leading Carbon Neutral Green Transition with Citizens," and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% compared to 2018 levels by 2030.

The greenhouse gas reduction measures consist of 104 detailed implementation tasks in six sectors (buildings, energy transition, transportation, agriculture, waste), including: strengthening the creation of citizen-participatory green buildings; establishing an eco-friendly transportation system; building an ecological base for eco-friendly agriculture and fisheries; improving the structure of the carbon-neutral circular economy; securing and strengthening the local absorption and response capacity; and enhancing the ecosystem for eco-friendly energy transition.

The main reduction projects include: expanding zero-energy buildings for new public buildings; small and medium-sized solar power generation projects; energy self-sufficient village projects; eco-friendly vehicle supply projects; low-carbon agriculture program operations; and resource-circulating village creation projects.

Previously, the city finalized the plan after holding a working-level council in January this year with officials from 41 greenhouse gas reduction project departments, and a public hearing in February to gather citizen opinions.

Oh Jehong, Hwaseong City's Carbon Neutrality Implementation Officer, said, "We will actively respond to the climate crisis together with citizens and move forward as a special city realizing green transition."
