for Transition to Busan Semiconductor Meister High School

The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Kim Seokjun) held a task force (T/F) consultation meeting on April 22 at the main building of Busan Electronic Technical High School to discuss the transition of Busan Electronic Technical High School to the (tentatively named) Busan Semiconductor Meister High School.

This consultation meeting marks an important first step toward fostering specialized talent needed for the semiconductor industry in the Busan region.

The transition T/F is composed of representatives from various organizations and companies, including the Office of Education, Busan Metropolitan City, Dongnae District Office, Pusan National University, Dong-Eui University, Kyungnam College of Information and Technology, Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, IQ Lab, BNK Financial Group, Busan Electronic Technical High School Alumni Association, Busan Electronic Technical High School, and Dongnae Office of Education Support.

The transition T/F plans to hold regular meetings and provide comprehensive support to obtain designation and approval as a Meister High School. In addition, a working-level support group, consisting mainly of practical staff from each institution, will be formed and operated.

During the meeting, which was presided over by the superintendent, participants thoroughly analyzed the reasons for not being designated as a Meister High School last year. They also discussed various cooperation measures, including: fostering talent in the semiconductor sector; developing field-oriented curricula tailored to different types of semiconductor workforce training; strengthening industry-academia cooperation and discovering outstanding companies; developing regionally specialized educational programs; plans for improving the educational environment (such as the establishment of a tentatively named Semiconductor Education Center and dormitory facilities); and student support measures.

To secure designation as a new Meister High School in the 20th round by the Ministry of Education, the city’s Office of Education is providing support in several areas: developing semiconductor curricula; supporting the establishment of the tentatively named Power Semiconductor Education Center and related equipment; offering training for teachers in the semiconductor field; discovering outstanding companies; and promoting the establishment of dormitory facilities.

To prepare for the transition to a semiconductor Meister High School, Busan Electronic Technical High School is converting two classes from the Department of Electronic Communications to two classes in the Department of Semiconductors, aiming to recruit new students for the 2026 academic year. If selected as a Meister High School, the school plans to change its 86-year-old name to Busan Semiconductor Meister High School.

Superintendent Kim Seokjun stated, "The establishment of Busan Semiconductor Meister High School will help build a training system for talent in the power semiconductor sector, which is a future strategic industry for the region, and strengthen the competitiveness of vocational high schools. We will do our utmost to provide the necessary support for nurturing the talent needed by both the region and the nation."
