Mokpo Coast Guard Rescues Drowning Victim Who Fell After Drinking

Police Officer Enters Water and Rescues Victim Just 7 Minutes After Report

A person fell into the water inside Songdo Port in Jido, Shinan County, South Jeolla Province, but their life was saved thanks to the swift rescue by the Coast Guard.

According to the Mokpo Coast Guard Station (Chief Chae Sujun) on April 25, a report was received at around 6:30 p.m. the previous day from a caller who urgently visited the Jido Police Substation, stating that someone had fallen into the water inside Songdo Port.

Just seven minutes after receiving the report, a police officer entered the water and safely rescued Mr. A (a crew member in his 60s), who was holding onto a fender (a device to prevent ship collision damage).

Mr. A showed symptoms of hypothermia, but it was confirmed that his life was not in danger. It is known that Mr. A fell into the water after losing his footing while trying to board fishing vessel B (75 tons, fish transport vessel, registered in Shinan) anchored inside the port after drinking alcohol.

A Mokpo Coast Guard official stated, "We urge everyone to exercise utmost caution, as the risk of accidents such as slipping increases significantly due to carelessness when walking around ports, harbors, and coastal areas after drinking alcohol."
