Weekly U.S. Jobless Claims Reach 222,000, Slightly Exceeding Forecast

The U.S. Department of Labor announced on April 24 (local time) that the number of new unemployment benefit claims filed during the week of April 13?19 was 222,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week. This figure slightly exceeds the expert forecast of 220,000 compiled by Dow Jones.

The number of continuing unemployment benefit claims, which are filed by those who have been unemployed for more than two weeks, was 1,841,000 for the week of April 6?12, a decrease of 37,000 from the previous week.

Despite some concerns that the U.S. economy could enter a recession, the U.S. labor market remains robust. As expectations grow that the Trump administration's federal workforce restructuring and tariff policies may have a negative impact on the labor market, Wall Street is closely monitoring employment market indicators that can provide insight into real economic trends.
