According to outlets including CNN, on this day, Meltem Bozbeoglu, an anchor for CNN Turk, was delivering live news when the earthquake suddenly occurred. The broadcast footage vividly captured the moment of the earthquake, with the studio visibly shaking.
Although she could not hide her surprised expression, the anchor did not leave her seat and stated, "It's an earthquake. A very strong earthquake has occurred." While holding onto the desk with one hand to maintain her balance amid the intense shaking, she repeatedly reported, "A very strong earthquake is being felt in Istanbul." Even as she continued the broadcast calmly, her other hand, raised toward the camera, was visibly trembling.
As the shaking gradually subsided, she asked the staff in a trembling voice, "Can someone contact my mother?" She was also seen apparently trying to reach someone on her mobile phone. However, even during this process, she maintained her professionalism and did not stop the broadcast.
The video was released on CNN Turk's official YouTube channel and quickly spread worldwide.
T?rkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that at around 12:49 p.m. local time, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred offshore near Istanbul. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that the earthquake lasted for 13 seconds, more than 100 aftershocks followed, and the strongest aftershock registered at magnitude 5.9.
According to foreign media reports, in Istanbul, T?rkiye's largest city with a population of 16 million, and surrounding areas, people ran outside in shock following the earthquake. So far, 236 people have been reported injured due to the earthquake, and no deaths have been reported.
In T?rkiye, two major earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5 struck the southeastern region bordering Syria in February 2023, resulting in about 50,000 deaths. T?rkiye is known to experience frequent earthquakes as it is crossed by two major fault lines.
