On April 24, the National Assembly convened a plenary session and approved the proposal to form the "Special Committee on Wildfire Damage Support Measures" (hereinafter referred to as the Wildfire Special Committee).
The establishment of the Wildfire Special Committee was initiated by Hyungsoo Park, Floor Executive of the People Power Party, and was swiftly organized with the agreement of the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Democratic Party of Korea.
The committee is composed of a total of 13 members: 6 from the People Power Party, 6 from the Democratic Party, and 1 from a non-negotiating group. The committee plans to focus on reviewing related bills proposed by both parties, including the "Wildfire Damage Support Special Act" introduced by Representative Hyungsoo Park.
The wildfire, which raged in the Yeongnam region from March 21 to March 30, lasted for about ten days and has been recorded as the most devastating in history. The affected area reached approximately 100,000 hectares, surpassing the total annual wildfire damage area in the country.
In particular, the damage to residential facilities was severe, with more than 4,200 homes completely destroyed. In addition, commercial buildings, warehouses, fishing boats, and aquaculture farms?key sources of livelihood?also suffered significant losses.
Representative Park stated, "For residents who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to this massive wildfire, the most urgent need right now is prompt and substantial support." He further explained, "Since multiple government ministries are involved in the Wildfire Damage Support Special Act, forming a special committee at the National Assembly level will enable more systematic discussions."
Park added, "Given that the damage from this wildfire was greater than any in the past, even a small amount of attention and care from the public can make a significant difference. I ask for your continued interest and support to help the wildfire victims return to their daily lives as soon as possible."
The National Assembly's Wildfire Special Committee plans to develop practical recovery measures and propose institutional improvements through the review of relevant legislation in the future.
