Ministry of Justice: “Strengthening Measures to Prevent Smuggling”

Drug Discovered Inside Suwon Detention Center, Ministry of Justice Launches Investigation Yonhap News

A substance suspected to be phencyclidine (PCP), a new type of drug known as "angel dust," was discovered inside Suwon Detention Center. The detention center has launched an investigation into the possibility that the substance was brought in from outside.

According to the Ministry of Justice on April 24, Suwon Detention Center detected a substance suspected to be phencyclidine using an ion scanner during a special cell inspection of inmates involved with narcotics on April 22.

Phencyclidine is a powerful hallucinogenic drug classified as a psychotropic substance regulated under the Narcotics Control Act. The special judicial police unit at Suwon Detention Center has requested a detailed analysis of the substance from the National Forensic Service and is currently investigating the specific circumstances, including the possibility that it was brought in from outside.

The Ministry of Justice also announced that on April 23, Incheon Detention Center used an ion scanner to detect a positive drug reaction in a letter, thereby preventing the entry of narcotics into the inmate living quarters. The ministry has established a comprehensive plan to prevent the smuggling of narcotics into correctional facilities, is conducting unannounced inspections of inmate cells, and has launched a rehabilitation team for drug offenders to operate treatment and rehabilitation programs for inmates involved with narcotics. In addition, the special judicial police unit, which has been expanded and reorganized since 2023, has intensified intelligence gathering and information activities to block the entry of narcotics.

The Ministry of Justice stated that it will continue to introduce additional drug detection equipment, such as ion scanners, to thoroughly prevent the entry of narcotics into correctional facilities.
