The Mokpo Chamber of Commerce has called on political parties and presidential candidates to include the key issues for the Great Leap Forward of the Jeonnam Western Region in their pledges, ahead of the upcoming June 3 early presidential election.
On the 24th, the Mokpo Chamber of Commerce issued a statement, pointing out that "amid the overall trend of local extinction, the Jeonnam Western Region is experiencing a rapid weakening of its regional growth engine due to an entrenched industrial structure centered on primary industries, the continuous outflow of young people, and limitations in residential conditions." The statement also noted, "All infrastructure related to jobs, education, healthcare, and culture is concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area, threatening even the basic foundation necessary for minimal development."
The Chamber further emphasized, "In order for the Jeonnam Southwestern Region to rise again and prepare for the next 100 years, bold government investment and policy support are urgently needed to secure sustainable growth engines."
Accordingly, the Mokpo Chamber of Commerce urged for the following: fostering advanced industries based on AI and renewable energy; establishing the Solaseado AI Energy New City; creating regional innovation hubs; strengthening naval MRO repair capabilities and establishing the "K-Maritime Defense Industry Innovation Valley" to respond to the expansion of ROK-US maritime defense cooperation; developing the "AI Advanced Agro-Livestock Convergence Zone" to secure global competitiveness in national agriculture and livestock industries; nurturing Muan International Airport as a leading gateway airport in Northeast Asia; and expanding the ultra-wide-area transportation network (including the Yeongam-Gwangju Expressway, Jindo-Yeongam Expressway, and construction of the West Coast railway).
Jung Hyuntaek, President of the Mokpo Chamber of Commerce, stated, "The Jeonnam Western Region is vigorously preparing for a great leap forward toward the future," and added, "I hope all political parties and presidential candidates will pay close attention to the five key tasks of the Jeonnam Western Region, which will be the key to strengthening national competitiveness and achieving balanced development, and reflect them in their pledges."
