Iksan City in North Jeolla Province is conducting intensive inspections of vehicles and motorcycles that are not covered by liability insurance.
According to the city on April 24, if a vehicle is not enrolled in the mandatory liability insurance, a fine of up to 900,000 won may be imposed for cars, and up to 300,000 won for motorcycles.
Drivers of vehicles without liability insurance are subject to a penalty ranging from 400,000 won to a maximum of 2,000,000 won, and may be referred to the prosecution, where they could face imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to 10,000,000 won.
The city is sending notification letters to uninsured individuals to inform them that their insurance has expired, and is also sending enrollment orders three times each month to encourage re-enrollment.
A city official stated, "Liability insurance is the minimum safety measure to prepare for potential loss of life and property damage that may occur while driving," and urged, "Please pay special attention so as not to miss the insurance enrollment period."
Meanwhile, last year the city imposed fines totaling 532 million won on 4,575 cases of vehicles and motorcycles without liability insurance, and as of April this year, fines totaling 54.3 million won have been imposed on 1,984 cases.
