KHNP President Hwang Jooho: "We Will Achieve Excellent Results in the African Market"... Full-Scale Nuclear Power Plant Exports to Africa Begin

"Based on our country's experience of achieving economic development through nuclear power, we will do our utmost to achieve excellent results in the African market as well."

Hwang Jooho, President of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), expressed his commitment to entering the African nuclear power plant market during his keynote speech at the 'AFNBP (Africa Nuclear Business Platform) 2025' held in Rabat, Morocco, on April 23-24 (local time).

President Hwang emphasized, "Many African countries with unlimited growth potential are showing interest in nuclear energy," adding, "In particular, they are seeking cooperation with KHNP." He attracted significant attention from participants by presenting a customized cooperation model tailored to the energy demands of each African country, based on Korea's experience in nuclear power plant development and export achievements.

The event was attended by around 200 people, including ministers of energy, chairpersons of nuclear energy commissions, and industry representatives from 17 African countries such as Morocco, Ghana, Uganda, Kenya, and South Africa. At the event, KHNP exhibited actual models of the Korean large-scale nuclear power plant (APR1400) and the innovative small modular reactor (i-SMR), and introduced its domestic and international experience in nuclear power plant export and operation, drawing high interest from countries considering the introduction of nuclear power plants.

In particular, during the event, KHNP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC) and agreed to cooperate in various fields, including nuclear workforce training, technical review, and financing. This is expected to serve as a practical bridgehead for expanding new nuclear power plant exports in the future.

Currently, several African countries, including Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Uganda, and Zambia, are pursuing the introduction of nuclear power plants with the aim of ensuring stable power supply and achieving energy independence. KHNP plans to participate in cooperation from the initial roadmap stages in these countries to accelerate the export of Korean nuclear power plants.
