Prosecution Investigates Moon Administration Defense Ministers Over Inadequate Verification of North Korea GP Destruction

The prosecution is currently investigating military officials from the Moon Jae-in administration on suspicion of inadequate verification regarding the destruction of North Korea's frontline guard posts (GP) during the September 19, 2018 inter-Korean military agreement.

On April 24, the Criminal Division 5 of the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Ha Junho) announced that it is investigating six military officials, including former Defense Ministers Jeong Kyeongdoo and Suh Wook, from the Moon Jae-in administration, on charges such as abuse of authority and falsification of official documents.

According to the prosecution, the Moon administration is suspected of inadequately verifying the destruction of North Korea's GP. Previously, the prosecution received the case from the Board of Audit and Inspection and assigned it to Criminal Division 5 earlier this month.

In 2018, under the September 19 agreement, the Moon administration and North Korea each destroyed 10 GPs in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), leaving one each intact, and conducted mutual on-site verification. At that time, the military authorities announced that "the North Korean military had completely destroyed its GP." However, in November last year, it was reported that North Korea rebuilt the GP and deployed guard troops and heavy weapons.
