U.S. Tariffs Shake Labor Market... Economic, Social and Labor Council Responds with Roundtable and Task Force

Identifying Social Dialogue Agendas
and Developing Policy Alternatives

The Economic, Social and Labor Council will hold an expert roundtable on "Tariff Measures by the Trump Administration and Labor Market Responses" on April 25 in the council's medium conference room in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The council plans to establish a dedicated task force (TF) to continue related discussions and work on developing countermeasures.

This roundtable is being convened to explore proactive response strategies amid growing concerns that the tariff measures imposed by the Donald Trump administration could not only affect exports to the United States but also lead to contraction in production and investment in key industries, reduced employment, and increased tensions in labor-management relations. Specifically, the session will address the potential impact of the Trump tariff measures on the economy, industry, and labor market, discuss tasks for response, explore ways to enhance tripartite cooperation, and examine the role of social dialogue.

Kwon Kisub, Chairperson of the Economic, Social and Labor Council, stated, "The U.S. tariff measures are a significant issue that could have a major impact on the overall labor market in our country, going beyond trade concerns," and emphasized, "Cooperation among labor, management, and government, as well as proactive responses, are crucial for crisis management."

Meanwhile, starting with this roundtable, the Economic, Social and Labor Council will form and operate the "Trump Tariff Measures and Labor Market Response Task Force." The task force will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the various impacts of the tariff measures on the labor market and, based on this, will identify topics for social dialogue and develop policy alternatives.
