Suncheon Ranks First in Jeollanam-do in Traffic Culture Index Evaluation

High Marks for Turn Signal Usage and Crosswalk Signal Compliance

Suncheon City in Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced that it received the Chairman's Commendation from the Korea Transportation Safety Authority at the '2024 Traffic Culture Index Evaluation' awards ceremony held on the 23rd at the Sangju Traffic Safety Experience Education Center of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. Suncheon ranked first in Jeollanam-do and second among cities nationwide with a population under 300,000.

The awards ceremony was organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority to recognize outstanding local governments and share exemplary cases, based on the results of the Traffic Culture Index evaluation conducted last year for 229 cities, counties, and districts nationwide.

The city achieved a total score of 89.29 points, including 51.16 points for driving behavior, 17.78 points for pedestrian behavior, and 20.36 points for traffic safety, placing it among the top cities nationwide with a population under 300,000.

In particular, Suncheon received high marks for significantly exceeding the national average in the 'turn signal usage rate' under the driving behavior category and the 'crosswalk signal compliance rate' under the pedestrian behavior category.

This achievement is attributed to both the daily traffic safety practices of citizens and Suncheon City's ongoing efforts to expand traffic safety infrastructure. In recent years, the city has promoted various traffic safety infrastructure projects, including improvements to public transportation facilities, the introduction of smart traffic signal systems, and the reorganization of pedestrian-oriented road environments.

A city official stated, "This award is the result of citizens' voluntary commitment to traffic safety, and the level of traffic culture ultimately reflects the maturity of the community. We will continue to pursue sustainable transportation policies, such as creating a safer pedestrian environment, promoting bicycle use, and improving public transportation convenience, with the goal of ranking first nationwide in 2025."
