The Office of the Prime Minister announced that Prime Minister Han Ducksoo, Acting President, attended the United Nations (UN) Climate Summit held via video conference on the 23rd. This was Han's first participation in a multilateral summit since assuming the role of Acting President.

In his remarks at the meeting, Han stated, "The international community is facing a complex crisis, including food security, economic inequality, and regional conflicts, as a result of heat waves, floods, and rising sea levels. In this context, we must strengthen international cooperation and multilateralism centered on the Paris Agreement."

Han also said, "The government is preparing the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2035 and aims to submit it to the UN around September this year after a broad process of public discussion involving various stakeholders."

He further explained, "Our government plans to increase the share of carbon-free energy sources from the current 39% to over 70% by 2038 in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Through the Carbon-Free Energy Initiative, we are promoting international cooperation to expand clean energy."

Han emphasized, "The government is significantly expanding Official Development Assistance (ODA), actively pursuing mitigation and adaptation projects in developing countries through green ODA, and making active contributions to multilateral climate funds such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Adaptation Fund (AF). We will continue to expand climate and green cooperation with developing countries."

This summit was jointly hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to establish the 2035 Nationally Determined Contribution ahead of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Brazil in November.

Leaders from around 20 countries, including G20 member states and former COP host countries, attended the summit.
