The Danish Prime Minister's Office announced on April 23 that this visit by Prime Minister Nielsen will focus on intensive discussions regarding cooperation between Greenland and Denmark.

During his visit, Prime Minister Nielsen will meet with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and pay a courtesy call on King Frederik X. He is also scheduled to meet with members of the Danish Parliament and business representatives.

Prime Minister Frederiksen stated, "In these challenging diplomatic times, we must support each other and develop and strengthen our relationship," adding, "Denmark is ready to contribute further to establishing a strong foundation for Greenland."

Greenland was under Danish rule for about 300 years before being incorporated as part of Denmark proper in 1953, ending its colonial status. While Greenland has been granted autonomy, Denmark still retains authority over foreign affairs and defense policy decisions. Since taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in incorporating Greenland into the United States, showing a keen interest in the region. The Arctic, including Greenland, is rich in resources such as oil, gas, and natural minerals, and holds significant geopolitical and strategic value.

Prime Minister Nielsen, who took office earlier this month, has stated that Greenland should ultimately pursue independence from Denmark in the long term. However, he emphasized that economic development must come first, and that constructive cooperation with Denmark is necessary to achieve this goal.
