On April 23, Jeollanam-do announced that it had achieved the highest number of selections nationwide by securing three out of seven ports chosen across the country in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' "2025 CLEAN National Fishing Port Development Project" competition.

The "CLEAN National Fishing Port Development Project" is an initiative to renovate the environments of underdeveloped fishing ports, remove abandoned fishing gear and equipment, and comprehensively improve landscapes, functions, and convenience facilities. The project aims to transform these ports into complex marine spaces that integrate both fisheries and tourism.

Each selected port will receive up to 15 billion KRW in national funding, with development scheduled for completion by 2029.

The selected ports?Maryang Port in Gangjin County, Eoranjin Port in Haenam County, and Gyemahang Port in Yeonggwang County?represent Jeollanam-do as national fishing ports. Each will be newly developed with its own direction, reflecting the unique characteristics and conditions of its region.

Maryang Port in Gangjin will be developed as a tourism-oriented port in connection with the Maryang Nolto Fisheries Market. The plan includes creating waterfront spaces using idle land, improving parking facilities, and demolishing outdated facilities to strengthen the foundation for extended stays in fishing villages.

Eoranjin Port in Haenam, one of Haenam's key fishing hubs, will see the construction of a new fishermen's hall to improve working conditions for fishermen and expand rest areas for residents. Additionally, a new alternative access road and a plaza-style waterfront space will be created.

Gyemahang Port in Yeonggwang, a strategic hub port on the west coast, will utilize its port land to develop a multi-purpose plaza, walking trails, and marine leisure infrastructure. By improving landscape-disrupting elements such as waste storage sites, the project will integrate the beach and port through a spatial unification plan, transforming the area into a marine cultural space.

From the initial stages of the competition, Jeollanam-do worked closely with local governments to implement a strategic response. The province encouraged city and county participation, held preliminary consultations with marine experts from across the country, and proposed development directions that leveraged each port's unique characteristics and strengths to support their selection.

Additionally, the province visited the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to actively explain the project's necessity and local conditions, and worked closely with local National Assembly members to request budgetary and policy support, making multifaceted efforts.

Park Taegeon, Director of the Islands and Marine Policy Division of Jeollanam-do, stated, "The selection of these CLEAN national fishing ports is a result of the recognized potential of Jeollanam-do's fishing villages and the province's strategic efforts by the government." He added, "We will continue to do our best to improve the quality of life for residents through fishing port development that people can truly experience, and to create ports that attract and retain more visitors."
