Gapyeong County to Develop a 2 km Trail
Showcasing Ecology and History by 2026
Gapyeong County in Gyeonggi Province (Governor Seo Taewon) announced on April 23 that it will begin full-scale implementation of the "Cheongpyeong Abandoned Railway Theme Trail Development Project," utilizing the section of abandoned railway in Cheongpyeong-ri, Cheongpyeong-myeon. The long-neglected railway and tunnels are expected to be transformed into a pleasant walking and healing trail, becoming a new landmark in Cheongpyeong.
This project will cover a total length of 2.089 km and will be developed in phases over approximately two years, from April 2025 to December 2026. The county plans to turn the targeted section, including Abandoned Tunnel A (140 meters) and Abandoned Tunnel B (100 meters), into a trail where visitors can experience both the historical significance of the existing railway infrastructure and the natural scenery.
The total project cost is 2.5 billion KRW, with 90% funded by the Hangang Watershed Fund and the remaining 10% covered by the county budget. This year, approximately 950 million KRW will be invested in design and construction, with the initial 636 meters up to the entrance of Tunnel B to be completed first. In 2026, the remaining 1,453 meters will be developed to complete the project.
On March 5, Gapyeong County signed an agreement with the National Railroad Authority for the use of idle land, securing the right to use the site free of charge for 20 years. In May, the county will hold a briefing session for local residents, and full-scale construction is scheduled to begin in July.
A Gapyeong County official stated, "This project aims not only to improve the landscape but also to create a premium trail where people can experience both ecology and history," adding, "We will develop this space so that both local residents and tourists can enjoy it, thereby contributing to the revitalization of the local economy."
