A Total of 38.7 Billion KRW Invested, Including 15 Billion KRW in National Funding
Transforming into a Smart Fishing Port Hub with a New Workers' Rest Area
Haenam County in South Jeolla Province (Governor Myung Hyun-gwan) announced on April 23 that Eoranjin Port has been selected for the 2025 CLEAN National Fishing Port Development Project.
Through this project, a total budget of 38.7 billion KRW, including 15 billion KRW in national funding, will be invested in Eoranjin Port to construct a new rest area for workers, establish a shared indoor workspace, create a smart plaza and smart rest area, and install facilities to reduce marine waste. The project will also include programs to strengthen local capacity, such as developing and commercializing food products using local specialties like seaweed and abalone, and running revitalization programs.
In particular, to address climate change and create a sustainable marine ecosystem, the county plans to develop Eoranjin Port into an eco-friendly, smart national fishing port by introducing intelligent smart technologies, ensuring safe and transparent port operations.
The goal is to transform Eoranjin Port into a clean and safe fishing port with expanded facilities, a convenient port that supports abundant seafood production, and an attractive port with smart systems that draws young people and becomes a vibrant hub for national fishing ports. The basic and detailed designs will begin next year, with construction scheduled to start in 2028.
The CLEAN National Fishing Port Project, promoted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, aims to remodel existing fishing ports?which were previously focused on fisheries functions?into pleasant and clean spaces through environmental improvements and landscape enhancements. Seven locations nationwide have been selected, including three in South Jeolla Province: Haenam, Gangjin, and Yeonggwang.
Meanwhile, the Eoran District in Songji-myeon, which includes Eoranjin Port, was also selected last year for the 2024 Rural Space Improvement Project organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. A total of 6 billion KRW is being invested in this project to improve the residential environment and construct resident convenience facilities such as a complex cultural center.
Additionally, the Ebuldo Island Bridge construction project is being promoted as a linked project with an investment of 21.7 billion KRW, raising expectations for significant changes in the Ebuldo area of Songji-myeon, the southernmost village of the Korean peninsula.
Governor Myung Hyun-gwan said, "I would like to thank National Assembly Member Park Ji-won and the residents of Songji-myeon for their efforts in securing the selection of Eoranjin Port for this project," adding, "We will do our utmost to further elevate the status of Eoranjin Port as a national fishing port and to improve fishermen's incomes and living conditions through the successful implementation of this project."
