Nick Turley, OpenAI Head of Product
Court to Decide on Forced Sale of Chrome by August
OpenAI, the developer of 'ChatGPT,' has announced that it would be interested in acquiring Google Chrome if the court orders a forced sale of the browser.
According to Bloomberg News on April 22 (local time), Nick Turley, Head of Product at OpenAI, appeared as a witness in a trial at the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., which is being held to address Google's alleged illegal monopoly in the internet search market. When asked whether OpenAI would be interested in acquiring the Google browser, Turley replied, "Yes," and added, "Like many other parties, we would be interested as well."
Previously, the court determined that Google had violated antitrust laws by requiring smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung, to set its service as the default search engine and by paying them for it. The Department of Justice, which filed the lawsuit, argued that a forced sale of the Chrome browser is necessary to resolve Google’s illegal monopoly, and requested Turley’s appearance as the second key witness in the trial that day.
Turley stated, "If ChatGPT were integrated into Chrome, it could provide a truly amazing experience," and added, "We could introduce users to what an AI-centric experience really is."
The court must decide by August whether to order the forced sale of the Google Chrome browser.
