Prosecution Summons Jeon Gwangsam, Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Society, Over Myung Taegyun Allegations Yonhap News

The prosecution, which is investigating allegations of nomination interference and opinion poll manipulation involving Myung Taegyun, has summoned Jeon Gwangsam, Senior Secretary to the President for Civil Society.

According to legal sources on April 22, the special investigation team at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office dedicated to the Myung Taegyun case (headed by Deputy Chief Prosecutor Lee Jihyung) called in Jeon for questioning as a reference witness on this day. It is reported that the prosecution identified circumstances in which Jeon exchanged communications with the camp of Mayor Oh after suspicions regarding Myung surfaced last year.

The prosecution suspects that during the April 7, 2021 by-election, Mirae Korea Research Institute, an opinion polling firm effectively operated by Myung, conducted 13 non-disclosed opinion polls related to Mayor Oh, and that Kim Hanjung, a businessman known as a long-time supporter of Mayor Oh, paid 33 million won for the survey costs on behalf of others.

In response, Mayor Oh's camp has categorically denied the allegations, stating, "We have never received any undisclosed opinion polls from Myung," and asserting that the claim about payment on their behalf is completely groundless. They also explained that, after confirming Myung's fraudulent polling methods, they cut ties with him, considering him unworthy of further engagement.
