April 25-27 at Daebyeon Port Area
Diverse Cultural and Hands-on Events
On April 22, the Gijang County Office in Busan announced that the 29th Gijang Anchovy Festival will be held from April 25 to April 27 in the Daebyeon Port area of Gijang-eup. The event will be organized by the Gijang Anchovy Festival Promotion Committee, chaired by Park Sanghyun.
Celebrating its 29th year, the Gijang Anchovy Festival is recognized as the nation’s top seafood festival and is widely regarded as the signature event representing Gijang. Since the festival was not held last year, expectations are particularly high this year, and a wider variety of programs are planned.
Starting with the opening ceremony on April 25, a range of cultural and experiential events will be offered, including hands-on seaweed harvesting in Gijang, barehanded live fish catching, the Anchovy Song Festival, and a fireworks show over the sea. Notably, the festival’s signature “free anchovy sashimi tasting event” will run throughout all three days, providing a wealth of attractions and culinary experiences for visitors of all ages.
However, a representative of the organizing committee noted that on Sunday, April 27, the third day of the festival, the 7th Gijang Sea Marathon will take place. As a result, traffic will be completely restricted in and around the Daebyeon Port festival venue until 10:30 a.m. on April 27. Visitors planning to attend the festival on that day are strongly encouraged to arrive after 11 a.m.
Anchovy, one of Gijang’s signature seafood products, is known as an excellent source of calcium in the Korean diet. In particular, anchovies sold in Gijang County during the spring season typically measure 10 to 15 centimeters in length, are rich in fat, and have a tender texture, making them suitable for sashimi and fermented fish products, among other uses.
Park Sanghyun, chairperson of the Gijang Anchovy Festival Promotion Committee, said, “Since this is the first festival in two years, we have prepared a wider variety of food and attractions than ever before, as a token of gratitude to the many visitors who have not forgotten the Gijang Anchovy Festival.” He added, “We hope you will visit the festival with your loved ones and family on a warm spring day and create unforgettable memories together.”
Gijang County Governor Jeong Jongbok stated, “By supporting the successful hosting of this year’s Gijang Anchovy Festival, we will actively promote Gijang’s top-quality anchovies and local tourism resources, and work to revitalize the local economy.”
