CIO Resumes Investigation into 'Fallen Marine' Case... First Time in Five Months Since Martial Law Yonhap News

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) announced that it took into consideration the ongoing trial of former Marine Corps Investigation Chief Colonel Park Junghoon in its decision to summon former 1st Marine Division Commander Lim Seonggeun for a mobile phone forensic investigation on April 23.

At a regular briefing on April 22, a CIO official explained, "The trial related to Colonel Park has begun, and the first-instance verdict has already been delivered. Since it is not possible to forgo the investigation entirely, the investigation team decided that it was necessary to set a date and proceed with the relevant procedures."

The CIO also stated that the fact that former Colonel Park, who was indicted on charges including insubordination during the investigation into the death of a Marine, was acquitted in the first trial and that the appellate trial has now begun, was taken into account in the decision to resume the investigation.

Regarding the recommendation of seven prosecutors for appointment to the presidential office, the CIO stated that the appointment process has not yet been completed. On the controversy over alleged preferential hiring of Prosecutor General Shim Woojeong's child, the CIO said, "The case has been assigned and is under investigation." The case in which Acting President and Prime Minister Han Ducksoo was reported for delaying the appointment of Constitutional Court Justice Ma Eunhyeok has been assigned to the 4th Investigation Division.

The CIO also announced that the case in which Judge Ji Guyoun of the Seoul Central District Court, who did not allow filming of the first trial of former President Yoon Sukyeol, was reported, has been assigned to the 3rd Investigation Division (headed by Chief Prosecutor Lee Daehwan).
