The Washington Post, CNN, and other outlets reported on the 21st (local time) that Secretary Kristi Noem had her bag stolen while dining with her children and grandchildren at Capital Burger, a restaurant in Washington, D.C. known for its hamburgers, the previous evening.
According to closed-circuit TV footage, a white man wearing a mask quickly left the scene after stealing Secretary Noem's bag. U.S. media reported, citing sources, that Secretary Noem initially thought it was her grandchild brushing against her leg at that moment.
According to reports, the bag contained approximately $3,000 in cash, checks, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) access badge, a passport, a driver's license, medication, and a cosmetics bag. Bloomberg News reported that the government-issued mobile phone was recovered.
CNN reported that Secretary Noem acknowledged the theft during an Easter event held at the White House that day, and stated that the case has not yet been resolved. The investigation is being conducted by the Secret Service (SS), which provides security for Secretary Noem.
Secretary Noem previously sparked controversy in March when she wore a Rolex watch worth about $50,000 while visiting a detention center in El Salvador that holds immigrants deported from the U.S. as alleged gang members. More recently, she faced criticism for mishandling a firearm in a promotional video highlighting the arrest of illegal immigrants.
