Full-scale Preparations for the Rainy Season
Approximately 482 Locations Targeted, Including Protruding, Rooftop, and Wall-mounted Signs
Yeongdeungpo District (District Mayor Choi Hokwon) announced that it will strengthen safety inspections of outdoor advertisements in earnest to prevent accidents caused by natural disasters such as typhoons and heavy rainfall, and to create a safe urban environment.
With the recent increase in typhoons, monsoon rains, and heavy downpours due to abnormal weather conditions, the district is taking preemptive measures to prevent accidents through inspections ahead of the full rainy season.
The inspections will target approximately 482 outdoor advertisements that were newly registered, extended, or permitted in 2023. These include protruding, rooftop, and wall-mounted signs; banner display facilities; and advertisements using poles.
The main inspection items are: whether the materials used in the advertisements are corroded; the condition of joints, including aging, cracks, and damage; the safety of electrical wiring; and whether the actual advertisements match the registered or permitted details.
In particular, the district will enhance professionalism by conducting joint inspections between the public and private sectors in cooperation with the Seoul Outdoor Advertisement Association.
If any signs are found to pose a safety risk, such as the danger of falling, immediate corrective orders will be issued, and follow-up inspections will be carried out to ensure that the necessary actions have been taken. Last year, the district inspected a total of 492 locations and completed corrective measures at 14 sites where risk factors were identified.
Additionally, the district is operating the "Outdoor Advertisement Safety Guardians" program to help maintain a pleasant urban landscape. The Safety Guardians, composed of local residents and outdoor advertising business operators, conduct regular monthly patrols and on-site guidance. Starting this year, the district has also distributed outdoor advertisement identification tags made of durable aluminum material to further strengthen advertisement management.
Choi Hokwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, stated, "The importance of managing outdoor advertisements is growing due to abnormal weather events," and added, "We will continue to do our utmost to protect the safety and property of our residents through ongoing inspections and thorough management."
