It was reported on April 21 that a South Korean fishing vessel was seized by the Japan Fisheries Agency's Fisheries Enforcement Headquarters after failing to comply with an inspection and attempting to flee within Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
According to the Kyushu Fisheries Coordination Office under the Japan Fisheries Agency, a Japanese fisheries patrol vessel spotted a South Korean fishing boat on the night of the previous day, approximately 360 kilometers northwest of Iheya Island in Okinawa Prefecture.
The patrol vessel ordered the boat to stop for inspection, but the vessel ignored the order and attempted to escape.
As a result, the Fisheries Enforcement Headquarters apprehended the vessel and arrested the captain in the act.
The vessel was identified as a 37-ton fishing boat, with a total of nine people on board, including the captain.
The Yomiuri Shimbun explained, "This is the first time since December 2023 that a South Korean fishing vessel has been seized by the Japan Fisheries Agency."
