A post and a two-minute audio file uploaded on X
Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education and the school acknowledge the incident and launch investigation
An incident at a girls' high school in Incheon is under investigation by educational authorities after a post on social media claimed that a male teacher compared childbirth to mandatory military service for men during class.
According to the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education and other sources on April 21, a post was uploaded the previous afternoon on X (formerly Twitter) publicizing a statement allegedly made by teacher A at a girls' high school in Incheon. The post included a roughly two-minute audio recording and claimed that teacher A had said during class that women who do not give birth should be sent to prison.
According to the recording, teacher A commented on the Constitutional Court's past decision to rule the military service bonus system unconstitutional, saying, "I think it is the worst ruling I know of." He added, "If men do not serve in the military, they go to prison, but there has never been a case where a woman was sent to prison for not having children."
He continued, "(Childbirth) is not an obligation. Isn't that why our country's birth rate has dropped to 0.67? Women of childbearing age who do not have children should be sent to prison. Only then will there be true gender equality."
It is reported that teacher A made these remarks during a "Politics and Law" class on April 17.
The Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education and the school have acknowledged the incident and launched an investigation. A school official stated, "We confirmed the relevant content yesterday and asked teacher A to submit a written statement explaining the circumstances. After an investigation, if any issues are found, we will consider whether to take disciplinary action against teacher A."
