The Jeollanamdo Health and Environment Research Institute will conduct an odor status survey until the end of the year to develop measures to prevent odors by monitoring odor-causing substances at three locations, including the Yeosu Industrial Complex, which has been designated as an odor management area.
The odor status survey is being conducted in accordance with the Odor Prevention Act. The plan is to collect and precisely analyze samples of 23 types of substances, including complex odors, ammonia, and volatile organic compounds?designated as odor-causing substances?at the Yeosu National Industrial Complex, Samil Resource Storage Industrial Complex, and Yeosu Hwayang Agro-Industrial Complex. Sampling will be carried out during early morning, daytime, and nighttime hours.
In 2024, the survey targeted 23 air quality points and 38 businesses in odor management areas. As a result, it was confirmed that one air quality point and three businesses exceeded the standard for complex odors and other substances. As a result, facility improvement measures were implemented at the relevant businesses. This is a decrease compared to the 2023 survey results, which found that three air quality points and eight businesses exceeded the standards.
The survey results will be reported to the Ministry of Environment and will also be made available on the Jeollanamdo Health and Environment Research Institute website so that all residents of the province can access them.
Oh Kilyoung, head of the Odor Management Division at the Jeollanamdo Health and Environment Research Institute, said, "We will do our utmost to develop effective responses to complaints through continuous monitoring and scientific analysis of odor management areas, and to ensure that residents can live in a healthy and pleasant environment."
