Pope Francis made a surprise appearance at the Easter Mass on April 20 (local time), calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
During the latter part of the outdoor Easter Mass at St. Peter's Square, which was celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Comastri on his behalf, the Pope appeared on the 'Blessing Balcony' on the second floor of St. Peter's Basilica.
Before delivering the 'Urbi et Orbi' blessing?which means 'to the city and to the world' in Latin?the Pope, through an Easter message read by Cardinal Comastri, stated, "The situation in the Gaza Strip is deplorable." He also emphasized, "I urge the parties to the war to agree to a ceasefire, release the hostages, and help those who are hungry and yearning for a future of peace."
After being discharged from a 38-day hospital stay on March 23, the Pope has recently increased his public engagements. At this Easter Mass, he participated in the service for about 20 minutes while in a wheelchair. After the Mass, he greeted the faithful around St. Peter's Square.
Prior to the Mass, the Pope also held a private meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who was visiting Rome, Italy. The Vatican reported that Vice President Vance met with the Pope at the papal residence and exchanged Easter greetings.
