Group B Debate of the People Power Party's Presidential Primary
The candidates attending Group B of the People Power Party's presidential primary debate revealed differing views regarding the 12·3 Martial Law and the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.
On April 20 at 2:00 p.m., the People Power Party held the first Group B primary debate at ASSA Art Hall in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. The Group B debate was attended by Na Kyungwon, a member of the People Power Party, Lee Cheolwoo, Governor of North Gyeongsang Province, Han Donghoon, former leader of the People Power Party, and Hong Joonpyo, former Mayor of Daegu.
Former leader Han stated, "I am opposed to martial law, but considering it merely a minor mistake is, in a broad sense, a defense of martial law," emphasizing, "Either you believe martial law itself was justified, or you believe it was wrong and that the president who declared it is unfit to serve. It has to be one or the other."
In response, former mayor Hong said, "(The martial law) was essentially a two-hour incident with no real damage," adding, "I opposed martial law, but I also opposed impeachment and suggested that former President Yoon Suk Yeol be given the opportunity to voluntarily step down."
Representative Na remarked, "I believe former leader Han incited impeachment by fueling accusations of insurrection, which ultimately led to this situation," and pointed out, "He was at the forefront of inciting impeachment based on the claim that 'the president confessed to insurrection,' which is truly regrettable."
Governor Lee also argued, "Does former leader Han even have the right to say such things now? Isn't it wrong for him to be running as a candidate in our party's (presidential primary)?" He further countered, "How could the president be accused of insurrection?"
