Han Donghoon Emphasizes "Young Leader for Diplomacy"
Na Kyungwon Responds, "Legal Professionals and Politicians Are Different"
On April 20, a Group B debate was held with four out of the eight People Power Party presidential candidates in attendance. Former People Power Party leader Han Donghoon emphasized his image as a "young leader suited for the diplomatic stage." In response, People Power Party lawmaker Na Kyungwon countered by saying, "Legal professionals and politicians are different."
The People Power Party held the first primary debate for Group B at 2 p.m. on this day at the ASSA Art Hall in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. The debate was attended by Representative Na, North Gyeongsang Province Governor Lee Cheolwoo, former party leader Han Donghoon, and former Daegu Mayor Hong Joonpyo.
During the debate on foreign affairs and security, former leader Han chose the "second Trump administration" as a keyword, stating, "The emergence of the Trump administration is both a crisis and an opportunity," and added, "We have many bargaining chips, such as semiconductors, nuclear power, and shipbuilding." He argued that South Korea should utilize these cards to negotiate for practical gains.
He continued, "The leaders of major countries are getting younger through generational change," and introduced himself by saying, "Think about who would be a good fit on the diplomatic stage. I am also a legal professional with a U.S. bar license."
In response, Representative Na said, "I agree with the overall direction, but who will actually do it?" She argued, "Legal professionals and politicians are different. Diplomacy requires accumulated experience."
Representative Na asserted, "If I become president, the first thing I will do is negotiate directly with Trump," and added, "A 'one-shot deal' is needed to resolve both tariff and diplomatic issues at once. Only Na Kyungwon can go to the White House and negotiate directly."
