Interim Report Meeting on Outdoor Advertisements Held
Application for "Designated Zone" Planned for Second Half of the Year
Junggu District of Daegu (Mayor Ryu Kyuha) held an interim report meeting on April 18 for the “Establishment of an Operational Plan for the Designated Outdoor Advertisement Zone in Dongseongno” (hereinafter referred to as the designated zone).
This meeting was organized as part of a research project aimed at promoting the installation of digital outdoor advertisements in key sections of Dongseongno. If the area is designated as a special zone, regulations under the Outdoor Advertisement Act will be eased, allowing the installation of large digital advertisements on building exteriors.
The Junggu District Office of Daegu plans to use this opportunity to transform Dongseongno into a media street with symbolic significance and appeal, similar to Times Square in New York or Dotonbori in Osaka, Japan. In particular, not only will large digital screens be used for advertising, but media art productions?such as giant cats or aquariums with waves?will also become possible, which is expected to have a positive effect on attracting tourists.
On this day, more than 30 people, including experts in related fields, local merchants, and building owners, attended the meeting. They shared domestic and international best practices and exchanged a wide range of opinions on the direction of regulatory relaxation, requirements for designating the special zone, and operational plans.
Junggu District of Daegu plans to apply to the city of Daegu for the designation of the special zone in the second half of this year. Afterward, the final decision will be made through the city’s administrative notice and review procedures.
Ryu Kyuha, Mayor of Daegu Junggu District Office, stated, “Large digital advertisements, such as those seen at COEX or Times Square, serve not only as commercial advertisements but also as local landmarks. If such media infrastructure is established in Dongseongno, it will not only boost tourism but also have a positive ripple effect on the local economy.”
