Jeonnam Province is taking proactive measures to address the low birth rate issue by providing practical support to infertile couples who wish to have children, including active communication with medical institutions.
As of 2023, Jeonnam Province is accelerating its response to low birth rates by investing 3.5 billion won in 10 initiatives for approximately 6,500 infertile couples, including financial support for infertility treatment procedures and traditional Korean medicine infertility treatments.
As a result, the pregnancy success rate for infertile couples reaches 20 to 30 percent each year.
This year, the province is implementing 10 projects, including a newly launched initiative to support the costs of tubal and vas deferens restoration procedures.
On March 12, the province gathered on-site feedback and discussed ways to expand support for infertile couples through a meeting with infertility treatment medical institutions.
Medical institution representatives shared their field experiences and suggested that health insurance should cover procedures and medications currently classified as non-reimbursable.
Based on the opinions collected at the meeting, Jeonnam Province plans to first develop concrete measures to include non-reimbursable items under insurance coverage and submit these proposals to the central government. The province also intends to continuously discover and promote various policies to strengthen support for infertile couples.
Kim Myungshin, Director of Population and Youth Policy at Jeonnam Province, stated, "We are preparing practical support measures to ensure that infertile couples do not have to give up treatment for financial reasons," adding, "We will strengthen our support so that infertile couples who wish to have children do not lose hope and can welcome healthy babies."
