"We Will Accept the Criticism"... Chungam High School Alumni Association Responds to Controversy Over "Chungam's Yoon Suk Yeol" Post

Fierce Criticism Over "Well Done, Yoon" Post on School Website
"Accepting the Criticism... Will Discuss Making the Post Private"

The Chungam High School Alumni Association, the alma mater of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, is facing intense criticism after posting an article titled "Son of Chungnam, Former President Yoon Suk Yeol (8th Class)" in reference to Yoon, who was dismissed from office due to the 12·3 Martial Law incident. The association is now considering making the post private amid the backlash.

On April 15, a post titled "Son of Chungnam - Former President Yoon Suk Yeol (8th Class)" was uploaded to the official website of the Chungam High School Alumni Association in Seoul. In the post, the association stated, "Alumnus Yoon Suk Yeol (8th Class) served as the 20th President of the Republic of Korea, holding the nation’s highest public office for three years starting in 2022. On April 4, 2025, following the Constitutional Court’s decision to uphold his impeachment, he stepped down from the presidency during his term and returned to private life. Through this post, the Chungam High School Alumni Association seeks to document the public service of our alumnus and to record his legacy as a son of Chungnam."

The post continued, "While the evaluation of alumnus Yoon Suk Yeol will ultimately be left to history, we remember the journey of a Chungnam native who bore the weight of immense responsibility. Whether his path was smooth or rough, whether we like him or not, it is undeniable that he is an alumnus of Chungnam. The time he spent as the nation’s representative must have been challenging in itself."

The post was met with fierce criticism from online users. Comments included, "The majority of Chungnam alumni would not agree with this opinion," "You should be ashamed in a place where children are educated," and "Why should innocent students feel intimidated because of a disgraced alumnus?"

As the controversy intensified, the alumni association posted an additional statement on April 17, expressing its intention to accept the criticism.

The association explained, "The post was in no way intended to support a particular political stance or to evaluate the Constitutional Court’s decision to uphold the impeachment. It was simply a formal record of a public service career."

They added, "We humbly accept the sharp criticisms and concerns raised by many alumni. In particular, we acknowledge that posting, in the name of the alumni association, an article containing honorific expressions regarding an issue that has caused national outrage?namely, the controversy over conspiracy to commit insurrection and illegal martial law?inevitably invites criticism for damaging the spirit and values of the Chungam community."

The Chungam High School Alumni Association further stated that it is considering making the post private and will establish improved operational policies to ensure that the diverse opinions of individual alumni are sufficiently reflected.
