Mapo-gu (District Mayor Park Kangsu) held a donation ceremony on the afternoon of April 18 to deliver a total of 35,190,000 KRW in relief funds to the Korean Red Cross. The donation is intended to assist disaster victims in the Yeongnam region who suffered significant losses due to a recent large-scale wildfire.
The ceremony was attended by Park Kangsu, Mayor of Mapo-gu; Hwang Hankyu, President of the Mapo-gu branch of the Korean Senior Citizens Association; Hwang Jintaek, Director of the Mapo Facilities Management Corporation; and Lee Hongju, Chairman of the Mapo Welfare Foundation. Also present were Park Jiyeon, Head of the Seobuk Volunteer Center at the Seoul Red Cross, the receiving organization, and Choi Siyoung, President of the Mapo-gu Council of the Red Cross Volunteer Association.
This fundraising campaign was conducted on a voluntary basis from April 1 to April 10, targeting all employees of the Mapo-gu Office and its affiliated organizations, including the Mapo Facilities Management Corporation, Mapo Welfare Foundation, and Mapo Cultural Foundation.
During the 10-day fundraising period, 11,120,000 KRW was collected from the Mapo-gu Office, and 5,070,000 KRW was raised from affiliated organizations.
In addition, 91 senior centers affiliated with the Mapo-gu branch of the Korean Senior Citizens Association, moved by the loss of senior centers in the Yeongnam region, raised 19,000,000 KRW in donations from early April to extend a helping hand.
On this day, Park Kangsu, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the residents of Yeongnam who lost their homes due to the large wildfire. I hope that the funds, collected through the heartfelt contributions of many, will provide some help and enable the affected residents to return to their peaceful daily lives as soon as possible."
Mapo-gu has actively participated in relief efforts in the event of large-scale natural disasters such as wildfires, earthquakes, and floods both domestically and internationally. Prior to this fundraising campaign, on March 28, the district provided 100,000 masks as disaster relief supplies to Andong-si, North Gyeongsang Province, which had been declared a special disaster area.
