Naju City in South Jeolla Province is launching an initiative to create a "livable and visit-worthy" glocal commercial district by utilizing the historical and cultural assets of the Naju Eupseong area.

On April 18, Naju City announced that it had been selected as a final recipient for the "2025 Local Branding Activation at the Living Area Level" project, organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

The local branding project aims to revitalize regional communities by supporting local governments in building living areas that people want to live in and visit, and that have competitive advantages, by leveraging their unique and distinctive resources.

The city was selected for the "specialized infrastructure type" project, which focuses on creating customized hub spaces within a 15-minute walking radius. As a result, Naju secured a total of 1.8 billion won, including a special grant of 900 million won.

Under the theme "Connecting the Sails of Naju Eupseong to the World," the city plans to establish the "Naju First Encounter Center" as a core space linking the historical, cultural, and artistic assets of Geumnam-dong and Seongbuk-dong in the Naju Eupseong area, as well as Hanok accommodation experiences and local culinary offerings, with tourists.

In addition, the city will simultaneously promote projects to activate tourist-participation content, such as international exchange events, local cultural experiences, a coexistence project for Eupseong merchants, a gatekeeper shift ceremony, and tours of the old roads of Naju Eupseong.

Yoon Byungtae, Mayor of Naju, stated, "We will create a core space where tourists can enjoy the attractive historical and cultural resources of Naju Eupseong," and added, "We will do our utmost to invigorate the local economy of the old downtown area by increasing the residential and tourist population, revitalizing Hanok accommodations, and boosting the commercial district."
