35 Employees from Gyeongbuk and Uiseong Offices of Education Volunteer for Restoration at Fire-Damaged Gounsa Temple in Uiseong

The Gyeongbuk Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Jong-sik) announced that on April 18, 35 employees from both the Gyeongbuk Office of Education and the Uiseong Office of Education participated in volunteer activities at Gounsa Temple in Uiseong County, which recently suffered extensive damage from a wildfire.


This volunteer effort was organized to support the rapid restoration of Gounsa Temple, which sustained severe damage due to the wildfire. The employees worked hard to clear debris and clean up the damaged areas within the temple grounds, as well as to collect fallen branches and waste wood from the surrounding mountains.

Gounsa Temple, located on the slopes of Deungunsan Mountain in Danchon-myeon, Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang Province, serves as the headquarters of the 16th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Founded in the first year of King Sinmun of Silla (681), it is a representative thousand-year-old temple in North Gyeongsang Province with a history spanning over 1,300 years. Due to the recent wildfire, cultural assets and temple facilities suffered significant damage, including the complete destruction of the treasures "Gaunru" and "Yeonsujeon," as well as the temple bell (Dongjong), which was more than half cracked.


Lim Jong-sik, Superintendent of the Gyeongbuk Office of Education, stated, "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the head monk and all the devotees of Gounsa Temple who are suffering from the aftermath of this devastating wildfire," and added, "All members of the Gyeongbuk education community sincerely hope for a swift restoration and will continue to offer our support."
