Police Rescue 95-Year-Old Grandmother from Flames with Bare Hands

A 95-year-old grandmother was saved by a police officer's bare-handed rescue during a house fire in Boseong, Jeonnam.

According to the Boseong Police Station on the 18th, a request for joint response to a fire was received at the Boseong-eup Police Substation after a house caught fire in Boseong-eup around 2 p.m. on the 16th. Six police officers, including Inspector Park Yumin (45), who were dispatched from the substation 3 kilometers away, arrived at the scene before the firefighters. Amid the spreading flames, they heard from the evacuated family that "an elderly person with limited mobility is still inside."

Upon hearing that a 95-year-old grandmother, unable to move due to leg surgery a month ago, was left alone in a room, Inspector Park doused his field jacket with water, wrapped it around his face, and immediately rushed into the flames. Inside the smoke-filled room, he found the grandmother just before she lost consciousness, carried her in his arms, and escaped the house. Fortunately, Inspector Park completed the rescue without major injuries.

The grandmother is currently in stable condition, and Inspector Park is on medical leave and resting due to smoke inhalation. The family expressed their gratitude, saying, "We couldn't dare to go in, but the police rushed in without hesitation." Park Seongdong, head of the substation, stated, "Inspector Park is a responsible officer who always carries out his duties calmly."

Meanwhile, the fire was extinguished in about two hours. Part of the house was destroyed, resulting in property damage estimated at 24.2 million won by the fire department. Fire authorities believe the fire started due to electrical causes and are investigating the exact cause.
