BHIG is accelerating its efforts to target the domestic 'Spent Nuclear Fuel Dry Storage Cask (CASK)' market, which is expected to grow to a scale of several trillion won.
BHIG announced on the 18th that it signed a 'Teaming Agreement' with the U.S.-based global nuclear specialist company Holtec International last year and is currently establishing a close technical cooperation system in the CASK field, including undergoing due diligence to verify BHIG's quality assurance system.
CASK is a special container designed to safely transport and store spent nuclear fuel, which emits high-level radiation and heat. Due to this, it requires specialized design and advanced manufacturing technology. Holtec, cooperating with BHIG, is a global leader in this field and has a diverse product lineup including 'HI-STORM', 'HI-STAR', 'HI-TRAC', 'HI-STORE CISF', and 'MPC'.
Currently, the wet storage facilities at major domestic nuclear power plants such as Gori Headquarters, Hanbit Headquarters, and Hanul Headquarters are approaching saturation, and according to the industry, demand for CASK is expected to arise from 2027. BHIG plans to rapidly secure high-quality CASK manufacturing capabilities based on technical cooperation with Holtec, a leading company in the industry.
A BHIG official stated, "As spent nuclear fuel management emerges as a core issue in national energy policy, the CASK market is expected to blossom in earnest as early as the year after next," adding, "Our company will achieve results in the CASK field based on the technology and quality management know-how accumulated in existing nuclear power plant facilities and power generation sectors."
He continued, "The domestic nuclear power dry storage market size is about 3 trillion won, and including the permanent disposal project, it is expected to expand to 8 trillion won," adding, "Through cooperation with Holtec, we will further advance our CASK manufacturing and technical capabilities, maximize business synergies in domestic and international markets, secure new growth engines, and establish this as a cash cow with a stable profit base to continue our performance growth momentum."
