Residents' Briefing Session to Be Held After Completion of Intermediate Design in May
Overall Compensation Schedule Adjusted to December... Construction to Begin Next December
On the 18th, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Kim Myung-gi) announced that it will begin full-scale project promotion related to the establishment of the National Hoengseong Veterans Cemetery.
Having overcome conflicts such as site location controversies, Hoengseong-gun is accelerating comprehensive preparations with the goal of a successful opening in 2028.
According to the ‘National Hoengseong Veterans Cemetery Construction Project Implementation Agreement’ signed last May, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs will construct major facilities including the enshrinement facility, memorial tower, memorial hall, and administration building, while Hoengseong-gun and Gangwon Province will be responsible for permits and approvals, as well as the installation of infrastructure such as roads and water and sewage systems.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs originally planned to complete the appraisal of the project site in January this year and begin compensation in February, but due to subsequent administrative procedures, the overall compensation schedule was adjusted to December.
Separately, the intermediate design will be completed in May, and the detailed design will be finished by May next year, followed by the groundbreaking of the veterans cemetery in December of the same year.
Additionally, as soon as the intermediate design is completed in May, a residents’ briefing session will be held to reflect residents’ opinions, and a working-level consultative body consisting of three organizations will be formed to ensure smooth project promotion.
Hoengseong-gun plans to gradually implement resident support projects centered on Deokchon-ri for coexistence with the local community and to promptly complete infrastructure such as roads to minimize inconvenience for visitors and local residents.
Yoon Kwan-gyu, Director of the Happiness and Welfare Bureau of Hoengseong-gun, said, “Since this is a large-scale national project, there are remaining administrative procedures that may cause concern among residents. However, the project is progressing normally, and we will continue to carefully manage it to create a space that honors the noble sacrifices and dedication and instills patriotism and a sense of veterans’ honor in future generations.”
Meanwhile, Hoengseong-gun and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs held a residents’ briefing session related to land compensation last March to explain the project direction and listen to residents’ opinions.
